Vehicle ownership trends are changing to meet SA’s mobility demands

Changing car ownership models in South Africa are shifting the status quo and driving emerging trends within the motor industry.

Remote work has become a reality for many car owners’ who realise their vehicles are now standing idle. To others, car ownership is still a dream, but they are unable to achieve it. While some, are just looking for a simple way to get around.

Car sharing with RentMyRide has emerged as a win-win solution!

As South Africa’s 1st car-sharing market place this innovative and accessible peer-2-peer platform offers a welcome solution for those looking to rent cars while travelling for work or leisure and a golden opportunity for local car owners to earn extra cash.

RentMyRide enables car owners to rent out their private cars, just like homeowners use Airbnb to rent out rooms or their houses to generate additional income. Effectively turning their car into an income-generating asset.

Car sharing is already a successful business model globally, with companies such as Turo in the United States and Snappcar in Europe, having proven that peer-to-peer car rental is an exponentially growing industry.

We founded RentMyRIde to allow mobility for everyone and aim to change the way people think about car use and car ownership,” says Sebastian Brokmann, Chief Executive of RentMyRide. “With the average car sitting idle most of the time, we knew there had to be a way to put these cars to better use. And, to provide a safe and seamless way for South Africans to share their cars.”

Cape Town-based Linda Molepo started using RentMyRide, renting out a Toyota Avanza and her side hustle has expanded significantly. She now has four vehicles registered with RentMyRide – two Mercedes Viano buses, a Mercedes Benz C180 and a Toyota Etios.

I was looking for a small business I could run on the side. I consider myself lucky because my vehicles are rented out regularly. The last two years have been difficult financially and I am so glad I started using RentMyRide. The additional income really helped me,” she says.

Molepo already referred four of her friends to the platform and they are also successfully earning a second income via RentMyRide. To list a car on RentMyRide, your car must be licensed and have less than 200 000km mileage.

Brokmann adds that RentMyRide is building a car-sharing marketplace based on trust and community and that keeping car owners and renters safe is their top priority.

If you have a tracking device in your car, that is great. If you don’t, we can arrange a discounted fitment with our preferred tracking device partner. We also take out our own insurance on the vehicles and the verification of renters and owners are vigorous,” says Brokmann. Eligibility requirements for renters include a valid driver’s license, a mobile phone in their name, a verified identity document and fraud and credit screening.

RentMyRide also offers 24/7 roadside assistance for all members of the RentMyRide community, offering peace of mind when renting or listing a vehicle.

The minimum rental period is two days, and the service is typically used by people who are on business trips or simply want the convenience of a car for the weekend or a few days.

RentMyRide is a win-win for both the renters who want to get around and those car owners wanting to monetise their vehicle assets.
