Since its inception at the start of 2022, the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing SA GR Cup has seen a number of exciting races, at all of the country’s best-known race tracks, with one exception: The daunting East London Grand Prix Circuit, home of the feared Potter’s Pass and Rifle Bend – two of the fastest corners on South African soil. With wet weather predicted for Sunday, the GR Cup drivers will be holding their breath in the hope that the front doesn’t pick up speed, or they’re sure to have their hands full this weekend.
The GR Cup is contested by six of South Africa’s foremost motoring media, with Ashley Oldfield currently dominating the series. During the season to date, however, he has faced some stiff competition from Sean Nurse, Thomas Falkiner and Mark Jones. Jeanette Kok-Kritzinger and Lerato Matebese complete the regular grid, though a number of guests have also made appearances in the one-make series, which features stock Toyota GR Yaris cars, fitted with roll cages.
The next event on the calendar is set for this weekend, at the iconic East London Grand Prix Circuit. This is not a track that many of the drivers in the GR Cup know well, as large parts of the circuit are in daily use as public roads, and the chance to race there doesn’t come around very often.
With this in mind, plus the potential threat of wet weather, the weekend’s GR Cup action is sure to be exciting. For Oldfield, this will be another opportunity to show his impressive racing prowess, though he’s sure to face competition from Falkiner, Nurse and Jones. The weekend gets under way with free practice on Friday, followed by Qualifying and two race heats on Saturday.
