New Tata Osprey lands from R249,900 and looks set to ruffle a few feathers

  • New Tata Osprey launches in South Africa from R249 900.
  • A 7-speed dual-clutch automatic derivative is available from R279 900, with the flagship panoramic-roof Creative+ PS DCA priced at R329 900.
  • Sold as the Nexon in India, the model has more than 1.1 million customers and holds 5-Star Bharat NCAP Adult and Child Occupant Protection ratings in India.

Johannesburg – As spring and birdsong return to the gardens of South Africa, the Tata Osprey has arrived in local showrooms.

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles are bolstering their exciting local line up with the addition of the Tata Osprey, a locally curated version of the Tata Nexon, one of Tata Motors most successful passenger vehicles.

“The timing feels particularly appropriate. Around this time of year the Osprey begins its seasonal return south, and this September our own Osprey lands in South Africa,” says Jeff Allison, General Manager of Marketing and Product for Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles South Africa.

The Tata Osprey lands in SA this September with a four-model range, that starts at a very competitive price of R249 900, while the top of the range derivative is priced at just R329 900.

Commenting on the launch, Mr. Thato Magasa, MD – Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles South Africa said, “We are excited to welcome the Tata Osprey to the South African market. As we continue to strengthen TMPV’s product portfolio and bring compelling new offerings to our customers, we are confident that the Tata Osprey’s distinctive design, advanced technology and strong safety credentials will make it a compelling choice for South African customers. Additionally, the introduction of TATA.CARS further strengthens this momentum by bringing a bold new global identity to the brand as we continue to expand our presence in South Africa.”

Proven pedigree

In South Africa the Tata Osprey adopts a unique name, but under the skin it is the Nexon and it retains all of the pedigree that made the Nexon India’s top selling SUV.

The Tata Osprey has been curated, positioned and named specifically for the unique South African market. The name is inspired by the dynamic apex explorer that thrives across sky, land and water. The Tata Osprey fuses sophisticated, premium urban comfort with the rugged spirit required for off-grid exploration.

“While the Osprey name may be new to South Africa, the vehicle behind it arrives with a proven pedigree, having earned the trust of more than 1.1 million customers as the Tata Nexon in India, “explains Allison.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the occasion, Yash Khandelwal, Head, International Business, TMPV, said “We are delighted to introduce the Tata Osprey to South African customers, bringing a compelling blend of safety, performance, technology and value. South Africa remains a strategic market for Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, and Osprey represents another important milestone in our long-term commitment to the country. Encouraged by the strong response to our brand since re-entry, and supported by our valued partner Motus, we are committed to steadily expanding our presence, portfolio and customer experience in the market”

Osprey’s importance

Tata Osprey’s proposition is about more than affordability. It is about giving more South Africans access to more of the things they want from an SUV, combining a strong safety proposition, turbocharged performance, dual-clutch technology, practical versatility and desirable convenience features at a highly competitive price.

For buyers moving into their first SUV, upgrading from a smaller vehicle or simply looking for more from their budget, Osprey delivers an increasingly sophisticated package as customers move through the range, without losing sight of accessibility.

“Osprey has been positioned to fit naturally into everyday South African life. It is equally at home navigating the weekday commute as it is carrying a family away for the weekend, while giving customers access to technology, performance and features they may not expect at this price point,” adds Allison.

Proven five-star safety

Safety is a core part of the Tata Osprey proposition, starting with the structure that surrounds its occupants. A fortified cabin forms the foundation of the safety package, supported by a comprehensive range of active and passive safety features.

Every Tata Osprey sold in South Africa is equipped with six airbags, Electronic Stability Programme, ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, ISOFIX child-seat anchors with top tether, seatbelt reminders for all occupants and rear parking sensors as standard.

“For us, safety starts with what surrounds you. Osprey combines a strong, fortified cabin with the active and passive safety systems designed to help protect the people inside it. Importantly, the core safety package is standard across the range, so customers do not have to move up through the grades to access these fundamental safety features,” says Allison.

The vehicle also arrives with a strong independent crash-test pedigree through the Tata Nexon on which Osprey is based. The latest-generation Tata Nexon achieved a five-star rating in Global NCAP’s #SaferCarsForIndia assessment, published in 2024. Global NCAP also rated the bodyshell as stable, while noting the model’s strong performance in adult and child occupant protection.

The Nexon subsequently achieved five stars for both Adult Occupant Protection and Child Occupant Protection under Bharat NCAP, scoring 29.41 out of 32 for Adult Occupant Protection and 43.83 out of 49 for Child Occupant Protection. The Bharat NCAP assessment was published in October 2024 and is valid until October 2028.

Turbocharged performance, DCA sophistication

All Osprey models are powered by a powerful 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine that produces 88.2kW at 5 500rpm and 170Nm between 1 750 and 4 000rpm. In the Smart+ derivative this is paired to a five-speed manual transmission.

Importantly, Osprey brings seven-speed dual-clutch automatic technology into the range from just R279 900 with the Smart+ DCA. The seven-speed DCA is also standard on the Creative DCA and flagship Creative+ PS DCA.

DCA derivatives are equipped with a Smart E-Shifter, steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters and Eco, City and Sport drive modes, giving drivers the choice to tailor the vehicle’s responses to different driving conditions and preferences.

Technology and comfort

As customers move through the range, Osprey adds a level of technology and convenience normally associated with vehicles positioned considerably further up the price ladder.

Ahead of the two-spoke flat bottom steering wheel is a four-inch LCD instrument cluster. Seating is finished in premium fabric as standard, with premium genuine leather upholstery available as an option across the range. The dashboard adopts a single or dual-tone finish depending on the model grade.

Depending on derivative, the technology offering extends from Harman infotainment and automatic climate control to a 360-degree Surround View Camera, Blind View Monitor, panoramic sunroof, wireless smartphone integration and wireless charging.

Practical Versatility

The Tata Osprey measures 3,995 mm in length, giving it the compact proportions needed to navigate congested urban environments with ease. Despite its compact footprint, it offers a practical 382-litre boot, while 208 mm of ground clearance adds confidence when tackling gravel roads and more demanding road conditions.

Four derivatives on offer

At a very competitive price point of R249 900, the Osprey Smart+ MT is equipped with the turbocharged engine, a manual transmission, all the safety equipment including six-airbags, ESP, ABS with EBD, a seven-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. LED headlamps and DRLs, rear parking sensors and 16-inch wheels round off the standard fare.

The Smart+ DCA builds on that and allows consumers to drive off in a turbocharged SUV equipped with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission along with paddle shifters and driving modes for only R279 900.

The Creative DCA ups the ante with a host of additional technology features at a price tag of R309 900. Standard features include a 10.25-inch Harman infotainment system and automatic climate control along with rear air vents.  Visibility and convenience features include cruise control, a 360-degree surround view camera and a blind view monitor. Alloy wheels and roof rails reinforce the practical nature of the Osprey.

As the flagship in the range the Creative+ PS DCA carries a price tag of R329 900 and ups the ante with a number of creature comforts that were traditionally only found in high end models. The exterior styling is elevated by full LED headlamps as well as connected LED tail lamps. The cabin gains an airy feel thanks to an electric panoramic sunroof. Staying connected while on the go has never been easier thanks to wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as a wireless phone charger. Keyless entry and push-button start along with front parking sensors and a tyre pressure monitoring system take the hassle out of every day commuting.

“At R329 900, we believe the combination of turbocharged performance, a seven-speed DCA, panoramic sunroof and this level of technology makes Osprey a remarkably difficult package to match.” concludes Allison.
