The South African Guild of Mobility Journalists (SAGMJ) has extended its Road Safety Pledge to the public as part of its Road Safety campaign leading to this year’s festive season.
More than 300 journalists took the SAGMJ’s Road Safety Pledge over the past eight years, showing their commitment to keep the country’s roads safe and to be ambassadors for road safety.
“The upcoming festive season, the Guild decided to promote road safety and increase the awareness of road users to contribute to safer roads,” says Carl Wepener, Chairman of the SAGMJ.
The SAGMJ’s Road Safety Pledge comprises three elements: sober, secure and silent. The Pledge includes good behaviour on the road and getting the driver to take responsibility for his passengers and their conduct.
The Guild has embarked on a social media campaign promoting different aspects of road safety. The public will have an opportunity to take the Guild’s Pledge with links directing them to its website where the Pledge can be taken (Click here)
“The Guild will keep focusing its attention on road safety to contribute to the awareness that will reduce accidents and deaths on our roads. Thousands of people’s lives are impacted every year because of road accidents and incidents involving pedestrians,” adds Wepener.
The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims is on 21 November, and with our busiest season of road traffic fast approaching, we are hopeful that drivers will take the Road Safety Pledge. The safety of drivers, passengers and pedestrians is our collective responsibility.
