Hyundai Motor Company’s all-electric IONIQ 5 has received numerous accolades over the past few months – among others a Best Car of the Year Award – and is also making an appearance in the Sony Pictures’ film Spider-Man: No Way Home.
In its latest achievement the IONIQ 5 received one of the Autotrader Best New Cars for 2022 awards in America. The IONIQ 5 is one of only 12 vehicles, including cars, trucks, and SUVs, to receive this important award. The experts at Autotrader examined more than 300 models, ultimately narrowing them down to a list of 12 new vehicles that are a “cut above the rest.”
The Best New Cars for 2022 comprise 12 vehicles selected by a team of experts at Autotrader, who collectively tested and ranked new models using a range of criteria. They focused on models that would be available for purchase within the next nine months and included vehicles they think offer significant value or ground-breaking technology.
Hyundai Motor Group’s (HMG) pioneering all-electric sustainable mobility models – the Hyundai IONIQ 5 and Kia EV6 – have also taken the top spot at the first-ever “Best Cars of the Year” 2021/2022 Awards. The joint world champions were singled out for quality, innovation, design and state-of-the-art technology.
Both the Hyundai IONIQ 5 and Kia EV6 won the Best Cars of the Year 2021/2022 title by beating new models from established premium brands, including the Audi e-tron, Ford Mustang Mach-e and Porsche Taycan. Each of the top ten places was occupied by a different brand covering six countries spread across the world’s top three car-producing continents – Asia, Europe and North America.
The Best Cars of the Year Awards were initiated to produce an unaffiliated, unique and totally democratic view of the “best” vehicles on offer around the world. The judges include designers, engineers, motorsport pioneers, acclaimed journalists, broadcasters and media professionals alongside outstanding vehicle retailers, automotive consultants, major event organizers and real-world car buyers.
As the reigning joint world champions, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 and Kia EV6 will be the star attractions at the ‘Best Cars of the Year’ stand at the British Motor Show from 18 to 21 August 2022 at the Farnborough International Exhibition and Conference Centre.
In its movie debut, the IONIQ 5 is featured alongside the all-new Hyundai Tucson in Sony Pictures’ film Spider-Man: No Way Home. Hyundai Motor’s global marketing campaign will also include a new TV spot promoting the IONIQ 5 with actor Tom Holland as Spider-Man, directed by Jon Watts. Spider-Man: No Way Home is the first film from a Hyundai-Sony strategic partnership, with additional marketing schemes to support future films in 2022.
The IONIQ 5 – Hyundai’s bespoke electric sport utility vehicle (SUV) – features a driving range of more than 480 km and is capable of ultra-fast battery charging from 10 to 80% in just 18 minutes. It rides on Hyundai’s exclusive Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) that allows for more interior space and optimized performance, and forms part of the Hyundai Motor Group’s plan to introduce 23 battery electric models and sell 1 million battery electric vehicles (BEVs) worldwide by 2025.
The Hyundai IONIQ 5 was launched in 2021 as the first model in the company’s IONIQ dedicated battery electric vehicle (BEV) line-up brand. IONIQ 5’s modern take on retro design includes Hyundai’s first clamshell hood and eye-catching V-shaped positioning lamps. The front and rear forms of the vehicle merge together at its doors to illustrate the “Parametric Dynamics” design ethos.
By being based on the E-GMP architecture, the fully electric SUV has generous interior proportions thanks to the 3 000 mm wheelbase with short front and rear overhangs. Such a combination delivers exceptional interior space, dynamic performance, ultra-fast charging and an optimal in-car experience, all of which adds to the IONIQ 5’s universal appeal.
“We are greatly honoured to be recognized by GOOD DESIGN Awards for these important vehicles and innovations,” says SangYup Lee, executive vice president and head of the Hyundai Global Design Centre. “This honour speaks to the outstanding work of our design dream team, who put their passion and heart into this project, and our R&D centre engineers who made this achievement together. It also reflects the competitiveness of Hyundai’s design identity in the global marketplace.”
Inside the IONIQ 5, a “Living Space” theme runs through interior, most notably embodied by the Universal Island, a moveable centre console, and flat floor where the batteries are stored. Many of its interior touchpoints, such as seats, headliner, door trim, floor and armrest, are made of eco-friendly materials, reflecting Hyundai’s commitment to a cleaner and more sustainable future for all.
With IONIQ 5’s cutting-edge V2L technology serving as a charger on wheels, drivers can now power their electrical devices, tailgate parties, camping trips, homes during power outages, and even other stranded electric vehicles.
